Spider veins are tiny veins that lie just below the surface of the skin and are connected to your larger vein system but aren't necessary for circulation. Spider veins may appear in a spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point, or a linear pattern that appears as thin separate lines. Red, blue or purple veins on the leg and face (broken capillaries) can be unattractive and cause you to become self-conscious. Most people, both women and men, often seek treatment for spider veins because of cosmetic concern.
While the cause of broken capillaries, spider veins and cherry spots can be the result from a variety of issues, including sun exposure, use of oral contraception, pregnancy, hormonal factors, weight gain, age or genetics, getting rid of them can be tedious. Even certain occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing can contribute to the development of spider veins.
During your consultation, you and Dr. Vajtai will decide together whether Sclerotherapy, laser treatment or a combination would be the best course of treatment to eliminate your spider veins. Combination therapy is beneficial if you have small, medium and large spider veins.
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate spider veins by injecting a solution through a very fine needle directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel causing it to swell and stick together, then start to fade from view. The number of veins injected in one session varies, and depends on the size and location of the veins, as well as your overall medical condition. Sclerotherapy treatment is not painful but individual injections can cause a slight burning sensation, similar to an insect bite, lasting a few seconds.
The number of sessions needed depends on the size of the area(s) being treated, with each session taking approximately 30 minutes. You may experience slightly raised, red areas at the injection site, which should disappear within a few days. Bruising may also occur around the injection site and can last several days up to a few weeks.
Prior to vein injection, you should avoid certain medications; please talk to Dr. Vajtai about all medicines, including over the counter drugs, herbs and dietary supplements, you are taking. Dr. Vajtai may recommend avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen (i.e. Advil, Motrin, etc.) or other anti- inflammatory medications for 1 week before having Sclerotherapy. No lotion should be applied to the legs before the procedure and you should refrain from participating in any aerobic activity for a few days after the procedure.
Laser Treatment is also used to treat spider veins. Under Dr. Vajtai’s expert guidance, as an experienced vascular surgeon, the cosmetic laser emits a prescribed dose of energy to the vein, causing them to coagulate and shrink, eliminating them permanently. The laser "selectively" targets the problem veins while sparing surrounding areas. You are likely to experience slight discomfort similar to having a small rubber band snapping against skin. Treatment time usually varies between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated. Laser Treatment does not require sedatives, pain medications, or injections of local anesthetic and you'll be able to resume normal activities immediately. Lasers are especially suited to treat small and medium size spider veins spider veins, when a needle cannot be used. Bruising usually occurs in the area treated and may last for a few weeks, while any redness or swelling should be gone within a day Spider veins usually fade over two to four weeks. After each treatment, you will see a 90% to 100% improvement in the appearance of face spider veins and an 80 to 90% improvement in leg spider veins. Treatment occasionally needs to be repeated to achieve a 100% improvement.
Spider veins in the face, or Rosacea, will usually be treated by laser therapy rather than Sclerotherapy. Laser treatment may cause minor bruising that usually improves within a week, but often, recovery is immediate. Two to four treatments may be required to achieve your desired result. You may apply makeup immediately following treatment. Dr. Vajtai will discuss any side effects that may be associated with facial laser treatment.
With cosmetic laser vein elimination, you will look and feel considerably better, often times with as few as one or two visits.
